Auto Insurance Coverage Guide

Auto insurance can feel complicated. This guide explains the building blocks in plain language so you can compare quotes with confidence. It is general education, not advice for your specific situation.

The four core coverages

1. Liability (bodily injury & property damage)

If you are at fault, liability helps pay for other people's injuries and property damage up to your limits. States set minimums, but minimums may not fully protect your assets — many drivers consider higher limits.

2. Collision

Helps repair or replace your own car after a collision, minus your deductible. If you lease or finance, your lender usually requires it.

3. Comprehensive

Helps cover non-collision damage — theft, vandalism, fire, hail, falling objects and animal strikes — minus your deductible.

4. Uninsured / underinsured motorist

Helps protect you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. Rules vary by state.

Limits and deductibles, simply put

Your limit is the most the insurer will pay for a covered claim. Your deductible is what you pay out of pocket first on collision/comprehensive claims. A higher deductible often lowers premium but raises your cost after a claim — compare both numbers together.

Optional add-ons

Roadside assistance, rental reimbursement and glass coverage can be useful depending on how you drive. Check what each add-on actually includes before paying for it.

What affects your price?

Insurers commonly consider garaging ZIP, driving history, vehicle type, annual mileage, chosen limits/deductibles and, where state law allows, insurance-based credit information. That is why comparing more than one licensed provider can be worthwhile.

Smart comparing checklist

Compare the same limits and deductibles across quotes; read exclusions; confirm the effective date before cancelling old coverage; and keep proof of insurance in your vehicle as your state requires.
